2D animation, handmade and painted, that breathe warmth and humanity.
The Price of Free was initially under the working title "Kailash," the name of the story's protagonist. The documentary follows Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi, who left a career as an electrical engineer to found Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement), ultimately rescuing more than 87,000 children from slavery, many in the clothing factories in India of well-known brands.
The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.
The documentary is directed by Derek Doneen, who I met at the Davis Guggenheim studio when I worked on the documentary "He Named Me Malala."
I was the storyboard artist and concept artist for the animation, creating animatics and future animation. The animation director was Jason Carpenter, with whom I have worked on many projects since "He Named Me Malala."
The desired animation style was similar to that of "He Named Me Malala."
Painterly animated sequences illustrating backstories told by Kailash and rescued children using 2D animation, handmade and painted, that breathe warmth and humanity.
